7 Tips to Be More Likeable

Posted on Posted in Trish Blog

We all want to be more likeable. Right? I really do my best to put on the charm and flash that million dollar smile but some days it’s harder than others. If you can attend business networking events and mixers, you will absolutely have better success in life. I go to events once a week. I know that my career and social life have much to gain by showing up.
Here are some helpful hints on how to have the best success at social events:
1. Meditation: On the day of the event, I make sure that I do the meditation through this App: Napoleon Hill: How to Win Friends and Influence People. It gets my mind right, so that subliminally; I’m pumped and ready to roll into the event and excited to meet new people.
2. Eye Contact: Once I’m there, when I’m meeting people, I make solid eye contact while speaking. Frequently the environment is loud and I tend to be leaning in to speak and hear the conversation, but I pull back whenever I can to make eye contact so they know I feel them and I’m in this moment with them.
3. Smile. If you are going to go to the effort to get out and socialize…SMILE! You will see that a forced smile will actually make you happy AND more approachable. Nobody wants to approach the grumpy person alone in the corner.
4. Ask questions. I’ve been in sales my entire life. I can spend the whole evening asking questions. It’s a really important skill set. It keeps the conversation going. For those of you that are single, it’s also a great tactic on a first date. Just keep asking questions. Don’t do it like a police interrogation, but more with genuine interest. People love to talk about themselves. Just ask a few questions to get the conversation going.
5. Let the conversation flow. Ask questions. Make sure that you are NOT the center of attention. The whole point of going to mixers is to meet new people for business and social purposes. So make sure that you go in with the intent of meeting new people and learning about them.
6. Remember names. I know it’s hard. I struggle with it daily. But when you are at a mixer, get their name and remember it. The high end mixers do not have name tags, where as a Chamber of Commerce mixer will have name tags so you can always glance at the name badge for reference. With Instagram so popular, if I’m having a great conversation with someone, I pull out my phone, open IG, hand them my phone, and ask them to put in their IG and then I follow them. It doesn’t matter to me if they follow back or not. I was talking to a woman last week at a party, no idea who she was, and then she put her IG in my phone and I was like OMG that’s YOU!? I had no idea. I just liked talking to her. Turns out she’s a big player in the makeup biz and maybe we can collaborate in the future.
7. 2 drink maximum. You may think that you do better at a mixer if you drink. However, the other attendees will just see you as a sloppy drunk and that’s how they will remember you. I play it by ear, depending on how strong the cocktails are. If my first drink is really strong, I’ll stop at one. If it’s a weak pour then I’ll have 2, but never more than 2. You are not there to get drunk. Save that for Saturday night with your friends. This is your business. You are there to meet people, mix, relax and make great connections. After your second drink, just get club soda with lime. Your brain will think you are still drinking and you can go all night without falling down drunk. Don’t be that girl/guy that everyone has a drunken story about!
