Sleep Does A Body Good

It’s Monday and I’m in my home office, blogging away by 7am and feeling great! How do I do it? How do I wake up on Monday, fresh and excited to get out of bed and go back to work? Well first of all, I love what I do. There’s that saying: “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life” That’s only partly true. My wife and I both work non-stop, 24/7 to keep all the balls in the air for the INC 500 company that we’ve created: Ruby Makeup Academy. We have so much responsibility: to our employees, to ourselves, to our students and graduates, to the community…it’s a lot and it does keep us awake some nights wondering what’s next and how we can improve our service.
But even more important than the fact that I love what I do…I got amazing sleep last night. I made myself go to bed early and was awake by 6am with the sunrise. Does it always happen like that? Nope. There are plenty of days where I don’t jump out of bed with enthusiasm. This weekend was extra awesome because I was alone and made the choice to just relax and Netflix binge. AND I was able to pick up a sunrise ride yesterday in Santa Monica. It is truly life changing. I just did a quick round trip from the bottom of Malibu over to Marina Del Rey. It was a quick 90 minute loop before the heat kicked in and the 1 million tourists piled onto the beach on this hot, end of summer weekend.
My mood is amazing for so many reasons but lots of high quality sleep is high on the list. I prefer 8+ hours of sleep but I can be highly functioning on 6 hours. If I get less than that, it starts to show in my inability to complete simple tasks. With less than 6 hours sleep, I sit at my desk and keep asking myself “What was I doing?”
To invest in your own sleep is the greatest and lowest cost investment you can make in yourself. The second best investment you can make in yourself is feeding your body with only pure organic ingredients. If you had a Porsche would you drop a Snickers bar in the gas tank? Treat your body like it’s a high end sports car that you spent $100k to acquire. Give it plenty of liquid fuel and only put the finest ingredients into it.
If you have trouble sleeping at night try natural remedies like valerian root or melatonin from the health food store. Do not resort to sleeping pills unless your sleeplessness is chronic and you’ve tried everything else. Sleeping pills can actually make you feel worse in the morning if you weren’t able to get into a deep sleep for at least 8 hours. If I’m stressed and I can’t sleep, I know I’m better off to get a few hours of non-drugged sleep than to reach for Ambien, knowing I didn’t have time for 8 hours sleep and I will feel drugged all day.
I get that most of you have kids and a lot of you have babies and so your sleep time isn’t your own, it’s determined by the needs and demands of your family and job. More than 1/3 of Americans are sleep deprived. It’s detrimental to your health, your job, your family and your sanity! We all need to get quality sleep so that we can breeze through our work day and handle whatever comes at us without snapping. So frequently I get calls from managers that start with “Trish I have a problem…” Because I usually get a good night’s sleep, I can say “OK, tell me your problem” and I remain calm. If I was sleep deprived that sentence would cause my chest to tighten and my breathing to get short and stressed. Do you see how the same sentence can give two different reactions? It all depends on how much sleep I’ve gotten the night before.
How much sleep do you need? Only YOU can decide your perfect true sleep number. Studies tell us that the human body needs 7-8 hours of sleep a night. From my own personal life experiences, I’d say that’s 100% correct.
Life is filled with daily challenges, especially at work and/or school. Why challenge yourself more by not getting enough sleep? In order to get the proper sleep you MUST put yourself to bed earlier. Sleeping till noon on a workday probably isn’t an option. Most of us get up between 6-7am on work days so that means you have to be asleep by 10pm. That means you need to start winding down by 8pm and getting yourself and the kids ready for bed. Don’t waste your precious night time hours watching TV or scrolling your phone on social media. Nighttime is your time, it’s the time best used for sleep rejuvenation. I’m a huge fan of sleep. When I go on vacation, I definitely factor in extra sleep time to make up for lost hours during my work grind. I make time for jet skis, zip lining and quad running too but I know that on vacation, in addition to a full day of adventure, sun and food…I need some extra sleep!
Without a good night’s sleep, you will not have the energy to function at your best. Life might pass you buy. Maybe your co-worker, two cubicles over, does get a good night sleep regularly and she is able to work faster, harder and smarter than you, all because of sleep. What will happen in this scenario? She will be promoted and rise through the ranks. Not because she is smarter but because she is smart enough to get high quality sleep every night so that she can be a superstar during the day and fulfill her dreams of a beautiful car, beautiful home and amazing vacations!
Some of the really obvious cons of not getting enough sleep are: heart disease, high blood pressure, weight gain, diabetes, depression and the list goes on and on. Your body needs sleep. It’s not optional. If you make it optional and skip it, you will pay the price!
The other night I had a friend call me at 8pm and I was already in bed because I had my alarm set for 5am for that amazing ocean front bike ride I had planned. I told her I was already in bed and she said “Why? What’s the matter? Are you OK?” People link early bed times to depression, boredom and “Got no life syndrome” but in reality we all make choices of how to use the 24 hours that are given to us each day.
Tomorrow is promised to no one. Today is all we have. Make the best of it and use your 24 hours like it’s your last. If you knew that today was your last day, would you lay awake in bed, angry or frustrated over something that happened today? Or would you be at peace and plan something fun for tomorrow morning?
Ok that’s it, my take on the benefits of sleep. I could go on and on as it’s truly one of my favorite topics. I don’t understand how people choose to pass on sleep. I also don’t understand the sentence that says: “I forgot to eat.” Forgot to eat? How do you forget to eat? Never in my life have I forgotten to eat! But that’s another topic for a different day. Today I want you to know that you deserve the benefits and joy of sleep. It’s FREE. Take as much as you want!
